Living in the South West 

 

The South West region of Western Australia offers a unique blend of natural beauty, vibrant community life, and modern amenities, making it an ideal place for psychiatry trainees and their families. 

 

Nestled in the south-western corner of the state, the region boasts a stunning coastline with some of the best beaches in the country, perfect for surfing, swimming, and relaxing. The area is also home to 24 national parks, tall timber forests, ancient caves, and an abundance of wildlife, providing endless opportunities for outdoor recreation such as bushwalking, bird watching, and camping. The South West is renowned for its wineries, fresh produce, and thriving arts community, with numerous galleries and cultural events that showcase the region's talent and creativity. With a Mediterranean climate characterized by dry summers and wet winters, the region offers a comfortable and enjoyable living environment year-round

 

In addition to its natural attractions, the South West region provides a range of everyday services and facilities to ensure a high quality of life for residents. The area is well-equipped with banks, libraries, shopping centers, cafes, and restaurants, as well as essential services such as police stations, post offices, and medical facilities. The region also offers a variety of schooling options, from primary to tertiary education, including the Rural Clinical School of WA and Edith Cowan University's South West Campus. Housing options are diverse, with a range of rental and purchase opportunities to suit different needs and budgets. For those interested in sports and recreation, the region boasts close to 600 clubs and facilities, catering to a wide array of interests from athletics to arts and crafts. Training in the South West

The South West Mental Health Service provides a comprehensive range of specialist community, inpatient, and call center-based mental health services, offering psychiatry trainees a diverse and enriching training experience. The Inpatient Unit consists of 30 beds, including 23 in the Acute Psychiatric Unit and 7 in the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, catering to individuals in the most acute stages of their psychiatric illness. Trainees will have the opportunity to work across various programs, including Child and Adolescent, Youth, Adult, and Older Adult mental health services, as well as specialized Aboriginal Mental Health services. The service also includes innovative models such as the Hospital in the Home program, Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre, and Safe Haven Café, aimed at improving community response and reducing inpatient demand. With a strong focus on community health, peer support, and consultation services, the South West Mental Health Service offers a well-rounded and supportive environment for psychiatry trainees to develop their skills and expertise.

RANZCP Training Posts

From RPTWA’s Comprehensive Training Hub in Bunbury and our Regional Training Centre in Busselton, the South West offers accredited training  posts across all stages of RANZCP training, including Acute Adult inpatient training in Stage 1 and Stage 2/3 experiences in Adult Psychiatry (AP), Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (CL), Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (CAP), Psychiatry of Older Adults (POA) and accreditation for Stage 3 trainees completing CAP and AP Advanced Training.
