Living in the Pilbara
The Pilbara region, located in the north of Western Australia, offers a unique living experience characterised by its stunning natural landscapes, rich Aboriginal culture, and dynamic communities.
Covering an area of 507,896 square kilometres, the Pilbara is home to some of Earth's oldest rock formations and features a diverse landscape that includes coastal plains, mountain ranges, cliffs, and gorges. The region's major towns, such as Karratha, Port Hedland, and Newman, provide a range of everyday services and facilities, including banks, libraries, shopping centres, and healthcare services. The Pilbara's climate is arid and tropical, with high temperatures and low, irregular rainfall, making it ideal for outdoor recreational activities like fishing, camping, and four-wheel driving. The region also hosts numerous cultural and community events throughout the year, ensuring a vibrant and engaging lifestyle for residents.
For families, the Pilbara offers a range of schooling options, from primary to tertiary education, and various short-term accommodation options, including hotels, motels, and luxury resorts. The major settlements of Port Hedland, Karratha, and Newman provide diverse housing and rental options. The Pilbara's strong sense of community, combined with its natural beauty and cultural richness, makes it an attractive place for psychiatry trainees and their families to live and thrive.

Training in the Pilbara
The Pilbara Mental Health & Drug Service (PMHDS) offers a comprehensive and enriching training experience for psychiatry trainees. As a community mental health service, PMHDS provides outreach to various towns and communities and in reach to regional hospitals, ensuring a broad exposure to different clinical settings. Trainees will work within a multi-disciplinary team, focusing on serious mental illness and complex cases, with strong support from Aboriginal Mental Health Workers to ensure cultural governance and safety. The service is divided into three community teams, covering different age groups and regions, with main clinics located in Hedland, Karratha, and Newman. This structure allows trainees to gain diverse clinical experience and develop a deep understanding of mental health care in a culturally rich and geographically vast region.
